Fantasy Baseball Player Rankings & Projections
2010 Shortstop Preseason Preview
Hanley Ramirez
|
 |
The best all-around player
in baseball gets the nod as the #1 shortstop in fantasy
baseball and can be argued over Pujols as the overall #1
player in 2010 fantasy baseball. |
1. Hanley Ramirez - Marlins - 2010 Preview:
He was moved to the third spot in the batting order and
that lead to a career high in RBI's (106), but a career low in runs
(101). It also saw him hit a career high .342 but steal a career
low 27 bases. So it does change the style of player you are drafting
a bit, but it does not change his value. Ramirez is just 26-years-old
and is already member the 30 home run - 30 stolen base and 20 home
run - 50 stolen base club. In 2009 he stole a career-low 27 bases
and even know his stolen bases have decreased each year, he will
still be good for 20-30 stolen bases in 2010 and he will do the
same in the home run department. Simply put, he is a sure-thing
fantasy-stud.
2009 Statistics:
.342 - 24 HR's - 106 RBI's - 101 Runs
2010 Projection: .319
- 28 HR's - 91 RBI's - 118 Runs
2. Troy Tulowitzki - Rockies - 2010 Preview:
He fulfilled his fantasy potential in 2009 by belting 32 home runs
and stealing 20 bases while batting a solid .297. Tulowitzki is
still just 25-years-old and has the potential to improve upon his
2009 season, especially in hitter-friendly Colorado. Add to that
the fact that the Rockies have put together a lot of great young
hitters that include Seth Smith, Dexter Fowler, Ian Stewart, Brad
Hawpe and Chris Iannetta, not to mention veteran Todd Helton and
you have the makings of a big-time offense with Tulowitzki in the
heart of it. He really came into his own after the All-Star-Break
hitting .344 which shows his is 100% healed from his injury and
big things can be expected from him in 2010.
2009 Statistics:
.297 - 32 HR's - 92 RBI's - 101 Runs
2010 Projection: .307
- 33 HR's - 108 RBI's - 111 Runs
3. Jose Reyes - Mets - 2010 Preview:
It was a devastating season for Reyes owners who saw their
high number one draft-pick struggle a bit early on and then go down
with a season-ending hamstring tendon tear in his right leg. He
had surgery and is expected to be 100% by the start of spring training,
though questions will remain about his speed. In 2008 a healthy
Reyes was fighting for the number one overall ranking in fantasy
baseball when he hit 16 home runs, 19 triples, 37 doubles, stole
56 bases while batting .297. He is still just 26-years-old and therefore
he has the potential to improve from his 2008 numbers and he should
have no problem seeing a full recovery from his injury. Keep on
eye on him in spring training to see if he is running and stealing
bases at 100% as is expected.
2009 Statistics:
.279 - 2 HR's - 15 RBI's - 18 Runs
2010 Projection: .288
- 14 HR's - 64 RBI's - 113 Runs
4. Jimmy Rollins - Phillies - 2010 Preview:
He has been all over the place the last four seasons hitting
as many as 30 home runs in a season and as low as 11, stealing as
many as 47 bases and as low as 31, batting as high as .296 and as
low as .250. So to project what the veteran is going to do in 2010
is almost silly, but we do know one thing, he will score points
for you in some way. He has likely peaked and will not see another
season like his 2007 MVP season, but a .270, 20ish home run and
30 to 40 stolen base season is still likely and that keeps him in
the top-five fantasy shortstops rankings.
2009 Statistics:
.250 - 21 HR's - 77 RBI's - 100 Runs.
2010 Projection: .273
- 19 HR's - 73 RBI's - 99 Runs.

5. Derek Jeter - Yankees - 2010 Preview:
Just when some thought Jeter was becoming no better than a solid
fantasy shortstop he has a near career-year and is back in the preseason
top-five. At 35, he is not likely going to produce the same numbers
in 2010, but leave it to Jeter to defy that. With the hitters surrounding
him in the mighty Yankee lineup, he will surely see ample pitches
and have plenty of RBI and run opportunities. If you do not like
gambling, Jeter is the perfect shortstop. The lifetime .317 hitter
is as consistent as it gets and even though he has been somewhat
overrated in the past as a fantasy shortstop, it is hard to deny
his value he gives fantasy owners season after season.
2009 Statistics:
.334 - 18 HR's - 66 RBI's - 107 Runs
2010 Projection: .318
- 17 HR's - 64 RBI's - 104 Runs
6. Alexei Ramírez - White Sox - 2009 Preview:
He disappointed many fantasy owners in 2009 by not following up
his 2008 potential that made him a 25 home run, 25 stolen base candidate.
The good news is he didn't flop. 15 home runs and 14 stolen bases
is nothing to write home about, but they are solid numbers for the
overall weak shortstop position. In addition the White Sox have
made some off season moves that should improve the offense. They
picked up Alex Rios, Mark Teahen and Juan Pierre in addition to
having a healthy Carlos Quentin and young prospect Gordon Beckham.
Ramirez is still the same young 25-25 candidate, though him seems
more like a 20-20 candidate.
2009 Statistics:
.277 - 15 HR's - 68 RBI's - 71 Runs
2010 Projection: .280
- 20 HR's - 70 RBI's - 75 Runs
